7/4/2023 0 Comments Water dwarf fortress ascii![]() You could potentially set up a virtual machine running Linux and use that from Windows, but it would take some technical ability to set up. The OP is running the game on an Amazon server and logging in remotely over SSH. Having said all that, it doesn't work on Windows. I think it actually gives higher FPS (at least using alacritty as your terminal emulator). Generally that means you get anti-aliased fonts. Using "Text" mode (setting "Text" instead of "2D" in the init.txt file) allows you to use a normal font on your command line terminal. Of course the normal DF graphics engine shows text by default, but it does so by basically copying bitmapped characters (the "tileset" is just a picture). The advantage (and disadvantage) of text mode is that you use a normal font for your command line, rather than using the DF graphics engine. So instead of using the graphics window that DF opens, you play it on the command line. "Text mode" is a mode you can use to play on a normal terminal emulator on Linux or Mac. The only real downside is when you want to make round rooms because it's a bit tricky.Īnyway, nice to meet another text-mode player! I don't think there are a lot of use around. If you want square looking rooms, make them 5x7 rather than 5x5, etc. There is so much inconsistency in the game anyway, the fact that people can walk faster vertically as opposed to horizontally, or that they can store more stuff horizontally as opposed to vertically is kind of moot. Now if I see DF using a square characters it looks weird to me :-) I think the key is, just imagine that tiles *are* rectangular and not square. I actually started to make one myself using FontForge, but discovered there is a reason why there are no square fonts: It's hard to make one that doesn't suck -)Įventually, I got used to the weird shape. Of course you can use any font you want in your terminal emulator, but after a fairly exhaustive search I found *no* square TTF fonts anywhere on the internet.
